Advice on conflict management strategy
Workplace violence definition
The Health and Safety Executive defines workplace violence as: Any incident in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work
Understand the issues
Before developing a response to violence you will need a clear understanding of the extent and nature of the problem. A specific review of violence will achieve this by assessing the risks within each job role and area of work, and examining both local and corporate responses.
The review will highlight areas of need and make recommendations for both management and front line staff. This will allow a comprehensive and informed strategy on conflict management to be developed and policy prepared.
Simple skills to minimise the risk
Part of the solution is to equip managers and staff with conflict management ideas and skills that will enable them to carry out their jobs safely and with confidence. These skills include:
- corporate safety strategies
- personal safety awareness
- managing expectations
- conflict resolution
- anger management
- separation skills
- escorting and holding techniques
- rescue techniques
- incident and post incident management
- one to one and group confidence restoration
