Guidance
Risk reduction underpins violence reduction
Maybo courses and consultancy cover the full range of risk reduction and training measures that might be in your violence reduction strategy
Risk reduction underpins the whole point of a conflict management strategy.
The key elements of risk reduction are:
- advice, guidance, and procedures aimed at safer working practices,
- equipment and design of the working environment,
- improved service delivery and reduction in triggers of violence,
- training and development in handling conflict and potentially violent situations.
Risk reduction identifies special areas of risk and provides role-specific reduction measures. A good example is the lone worker who, in addition to the generic measures, may need extra equipment (mobile phone, attack alarm), special working practices (scheduled 'call in' procedures) and special training (personal security and safety awareness, exit strategies etc.).Training includes personal safety awareness and conflict resolution training, and an understanding of key aspects of the law. Where employees have to apprehend thieves or control physically violent individuals, they must be trained in the physical intervention skills relating to these tasks.
Simple skills to minimise the risk
Part of the solution is to equip managers and staff with ideas and skills that will enable them to carry out their jobs safely and with confidence.
These skills include:
- corporate safety strategies
- personal safety awareness
- managing expectations
- conflict resolution
- anger management
- separation skills
- escorting and holding techniques
- rescue techniques
- incident and post incident management
- one to one and group confidence restoration
