Mental health restrictive practice definitions for Specialised Services Quality Dashboards (SSQD) have been published for 2020/21.

The dashboards are designed to measure the quality of care that is being provided to patients, by collecting data on the types of interventions that are being used, such as the number of restraints, seclusions and tranquilisations.

SSQDs enable comparisons to be made between service providers with the aim of supporting improvements to the outcomes of services that are commissioned by NHS England.

NHS England: Specialised Services Quality Dashboards: mental health restrictive practice metric definitions for 2020/21

    Maybo perspective

Quality data is a key for an effective strategy to identify and reduce restrictive practices, so clear and consistent definitions are welcome and overdue. This will help with goal setting and make evaluation of progress easier. It will also allow better cross organisation and national comparisons and help prevent services categorising highly restrictive interventions in ways that sound palatable!

Employees need to recognise restrictive practices and their key role in reducing these. To help with this Maybo’s RRN Approved training includes a specific module on promoting human rights and reducing restrictive practices, available as interactive eLearning and as a taught module.
