The British Security Industry Association (BSIA), Security Institute and the Security Commonwealth have launched an awareness campaign that aims to highlight the essential role security officers have played in creating safe and secure environments during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The private security industry has developed vastly in the last 10 years and the campaign is designed to challenge perceptions and showcase security professionals as respected, valued, professional service providers who are central to protecting people, places and property.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, security officers have played a key role within critical settings, such as coronavirus testing centres and the NHS Nightingale hospitals. They have also supported the smooth delivery of critical food deliveries from warehouses, managed queues and customers at supermarkets, safeguarded the homeless in sheltered accommodation and supported police patrols in London.

Mike Reddington, Chief Executive of the BSIA, said the work highlights how security professionals should be considered as key workers that are acknowledged and embedded in our daily lives.

He continued: “The recognition of security officers as key workers is the start of a re-appraisal of what service they provide to the community in keeping the public safe and secure.  As we exit lockdown and have to navigate public spaces again, they will have a crucial role in supporting public confidence.  We are working closely with the police and all other public bodies to find the best way to achieve this.”
